Medicare Supplement Insurance

Medicare Supplement insurance, also called Medigap, helps pay for certain out-of-pocket costs that Original Medicare doesn\u2019t fully cover. These plans are sold by private insurance companies and work alongside your Original Medicare coverage \u2014 not as a replacement for it.

Who might want to learn about this

  • People who want the flexibility to see any doctor or specialist who accepts Medicare.
  • Those concerned about out-of-pocket costs like deductibles, copays, and coinsurance.
  • People who travel within the United States and want broader coverage.
  • Those who prefer predictable costs for covered services.

Important factors to compare

Standardized plan types

Medigap plans are standardized by letter (such as Plan G or Plan N). Benefits are the same across insurers for the same letter plan in most states.

Premiums

Compare premiums for the same plan type across different insurance companies, since benefits are standardized.

Enrollment timing

The best time to buy a Medigap policy is during your Medigap Open Enrollment Period, when certain protections apply.

Medical underwriting

Outside of certain protected enrollment periods, you may need to answer health questions and could be denied coverage.

Works with Original Medicare

Medigap does not work with Medicare Advantage. You cannot have both a Medigap policy and a Medicare Advantage plan at the same time.

Common questions

Does Medigap cover prescription drugs?

No. Medigap plans sold after 2006 do not include prescription drug coverage. You would need a separate Medicare Part D plan for drug coverage.

Can I buy a Medigap plan at any time?

You can apply for a Medigap policy at any time, but outside of your open enrollment period or a protected situation, the insurance company can use medical underwriting and may decline your application.

Is Medigap the same as Medicare Advantage?

No. Medigap works alongside Original Medicare to help cover out-of-pocket costs. Medicare Advantage is an alternative way to receive Medicare benefits. They work very differently.
